Coming from a career defined by the high-tech collaboration of Silicon Valley, writing a novel was a profound departure. In the semiconductor industry, every project is a symphony of technical specialists working in concert. Writing, by contrast, is largely a solitary journey—one that required a complete recalibration of my thinking as I traded the logic of chip development for the architecture of narrative and began the pursuit of an entirely new craft.
This shift in perspective became particularly evident once I completed the first draft of The Compass and began navigating the labyrinth of modern publishing. I was fortunate to find local writing communities that guided the way. Through the California Writers Club (CWC) and its South Bay Writers (SBW) branch, I was able to demystify the process while connecting with many remarkable authors.
I also want to thank my son, Saahil, for introducing me to the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference (MCWC), which I attended last year. Beyond the delightful congregation with fellow writers, the workshop on publishing and the sessions on book editing and marketing provided an invaluable learning experience.
I owe a particular debt of gratitude to the team at Rupa Publications for launching this work. I would like to thank Dibakar Ghosh, Editorial Director, for his expert guidance at every stage. To my editor, Anupama Roy: thank you for your tireless collaboration. Your diligent efforts and sharp attention to detail transformed this manuscript into something far superior to its first iteration.
To my beta readers, who offered the thoughtful critiques a long-form novel demands: thank you for your time and insight, especially Jessica Tsao, Kit Vincent, Mayank Patel, Rajeev Rohatgi and Shirish Deodhar, as well as the members of the SBW Critique Group.
I am also grateful to my fellow Silicon Valley novelists who generously shared the lessons of their own debut journeys: Akash Pasricha, Bruce Overby and Rajesh Oza. Your friendship made the "lonely journey" of a debut author feel far less so.
Finally, my deepest thanks go to my daughter, Sonya, for her unwavering encouragement throughout this entire journey and for supporting me with the talented team at her agency, Expand Your Capacity (EYC). I would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Sonia Corredor for her integral role in creating the website www.thecompassnovel.com, and to Winter Jendayi for her graphical enhancements that brought my aesthetic vision of the website to life.
